archaeology is very deeply linked to cinema. making a film is like carrying out an archaeological excavation that begins with only a hint, some clues that something is there - a shape, perhaps a pile of earth that has a strange shape different from the others, or special plants that grow only where there is emptiness. and as we start digging, fragments emerge, and we slowly begin to reconstruct the story. we are also confused at times with these fragments, because we can't yet understand how they fit together. but the most beautiful moment is shaping everything we have found into a story, and seeing a story that belongs to us and is our past, and someone else's past also. so i think there's a profound connection being an archaeologist and being a filmmaker. ➴
