FULBRIGHT BRAINMUSH

  • Throughout my study of Mandarin, and three trips to China, the quick, metallic syllables of spoken Chinese, and the complex strokes of the characters have presented themselves as a fascinating puzzle for me to solve. Taiwan, as an island with many different cultural influences, is also a puzzle. On the map, it appears that Taiwan like it’s in the periphery of a large mainland China, but Taiwan is really at the heart of Chinese culture, and vice versa. I realized later that much of the music, movies, and other pop culture that my Chinese friends shared with me actually came from Taiwan. So what is Taiwan exactly? I wondered. Some say it is part of China. Some say it is a nation unto itself. Taiwanese speak Mandarin, but also their own distinct dialect, and use traditional characters instead of the simplified...

whenever a new history is written, the old histories all have to be thrown out. in the process, words are remade, and the meanings of current words are changed. what with history being rewritten so often, nobody knows what is true anymore. they lose track of who is an enemy and who an ally.

The Obama administration says human rights are central to its foreign policy toward China, but as the Asian power's international stature has grown, America's leverage in pressing individual cases appears to have diminished. The U.S. relies on China as its main foreign creditor, and seeks its help – with mixed success - on a gamut of international issues, including

  • You can always tell the character of a place by the nicknames it has earned. Appropriately enough for the city that inspired The Strange Case of Dr Jekyll and Mr Hyde, Edinburgh has two contradictory - but complementary - ones.
  • The Athens of the North, a name inspired by the great thinkers of the Scottish Enlightenment, is a city of high culture and lofty ideals, of art and literature, philosophy and science. It is here that each summer the world's biggest arts festival rises, phoenixlike, from the ashes of last year's rave reviews and broken box-office records to produce yet another string of superlatives. And it is here, beneath the Greek temples of Calton Hill - Edinburgh's acropolis - that the Scottish Parliament sits again after a 300-year absence.

  • To be sensual is to respect and rejoice in the force of life, of life itself, and to be present in all that one does, from the effort of loving others to the breaking of bread. It will be a great day for America, incidentally, when we begin to eat bread again, instead of the blasphemous and tasteless foam rubber that we have substituted for it. And I am not being frivolous now, either. Something very sinister happens to the people of a country when they begin to distrust their own reactions as deeply as they do here, and become as joyless as they have become. - James Baldwin

  • We were embarking on a mission of moon colonization- but something went wrong on the space ship, so we had to evacuate by parachute. At the end of every parachute was a coffin that we climbed into by two's. I was paired with my high school boyfriend, and as we fell we speculated as to what the outside of our coffin looked like. I said that I had always wanted a blue wooden one, while he wanted a metal one. We landed safely and filed into what looked like a hurricane evacuation shelter. I found my mom and my little brother sitting in the cafeteria, and they hugged me and handed me an apple.
  • I had a dream that we were at a big outdoor campground, with some cabins like at a summer camp, and I was going to ask a boy in my writing class if he'd like to spend some time with me. But I heard that he thought I was stalking him, so I confro...
