So friends, this is an exercise in ego, but I can live with that. It's also the easiest way to encourage stalkers without seeming entirely nuts. I'll live with that too.

About: I'm a student at UBC in lovely, rainy Vancouver. I live in an old house in the city with some rad roommates and a lot of house plants. I'm a writer, reader, activist, cyclist, and a history and anthropology major.

  • An orphaned Incan girl is sentenced to be sacrificed. The book describes her life over the few months leading up to the appointed date and her eventual escape. Children's paperback with a blue cover and an illustration of the girl dressed in bright clothes. Found! A Gift For Ampato
  • A mystery solved by an orphaned girl who says she wouldn't be king (or queen) for all the tea in China. Features an attempted murder by poison of an old man, who is told he'll die "when the mockingbird's sing" (it may not actually be mockingbirds), the girl realizes someone has set his hearing-aids to play the sounds of mockingbirds, as they are not singing at that time of year. (Or something like that) Dark, quirky children's paperback with a mostly black cover with some electric blue and a depiction of the heroine in a lower corner.

Shopping for Leny: A quick guide

  • Jewelry: It's a gift I can carry with me every day. I wear bracelets, necklaces, stud earrings (no dangle-y earrings), rings, and enamel pins. My ring sizes range from 7 to 14 (larger sizes from 10-14 are great), and I wear midi rings, size 5. I like pieces that incorporate wood, semi-precious stones (eg: turquoise), and other things found in nature (fossils, shells, etc). My favourite motifs are things like keys, geometric shapes, feathers, trees, mountains, antlers, insect wings, and other natural elements. (A nice place to buy necklaces or bracelets from is The Giving Keys)
  • Books: Check my Indigo Wish List, or ask me.
  • Tea: Check out my DAVIDs Tea Wish List search for my list using my email: helen.r.wagner@gmail.com
  • Renew my subscription to the New Yorker or WIRED, or subscribe me to Harper's, the Walrus, the Atlantic, or & Other Stories (for 4 or 6 books).

What's doing it for me right now

  • The author's name is Japanese, Sub-Saharan African (I recognize Bantu origin most easily), Malay, or sounds like it might belong to a Latin American
  • Views of water on the cover
  • People swimming on the cover (profiles, incomplete shots, and abstracts only)
  • Blue covers in general
  • Green is a prospect almost exciting as blue
  • Minimalism or Collage art
  • Reviews by authors I've read
  • An easily visible, eye catching title
  • A title that sells the book (recent favourites are Music For Torching, The Thought Gang, The Whole Stupid Way We Are and Ghana Must Go)
  • Abstract cover art
  • Published by Penguin, Vintage, Conundrum, or any publishing house I haven't heard of

As inspired by a friend of mine who has such a list.

  • alabaster
  • cling, clung (mostly the latter)
  • nugget, nougat (or any other form thereof)
  • blimp
  • zit
  • zap, zapped (please, just use shocked. it's okay if you're saying something odd like "zip zap zoop," but only then)
  • most modern onomatopoeia words (these are really only permissible in comic books (in my opinion), thank you very much)
  • chunk
  • clump
  • teat, tit
  • "cray" (as in "crazy"- this annoys me to no end, really)
  • I love the word twilight, and detest its recent association with vampires and poor...
