Note, I am a believer in giving, just not in soliciting people in the middle of nowhere and putting them on the spot. It is tacky. That said, here are ways I have tried to avoid these unfortunate solicitors:

• "I have no money on me." (On my way into the movie theater to buy a ticket).
• "Um...you guys have a website, right? Yeah, yeah, I'll look into it."
• "I just donated to the last guy."
• "Um, I'm in a hurry." (My leisurely slow pace suddenly quickens).
• "I....um...." (mumbles something incoherent and saunters away)

• Dead battery.
• I don't want to talk. And here are some reasons why:
  • I am busy. (Probably engrossed in a movie or writing assignment).
  • I don't want to talk to you specifically. And here are some reasons why:
    • I know we will get into a long conversation and I don't have time right now.
    • Something awkward has happened between us and I am not ready to talk to you.
    • I am trying to flake out on you.
  • I am sick and too tired to answer the phone.
• I am sleeping.
